Music as an art can be seen as “easy entertainment”. Songs are short (compared to a novel for example), and consumable. Hemingway famously said that “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Similarly there’s nothing easy about opening up yourself in an honest song, telling the whole world how do you feel, how you’ve been hurt, how you’re down, how you feel worthless.
It’s not about the length of a piece of art: it’s about the depth.
Being an artist generally speaking means that one feels deeper, all emotions are heightened. I dedicate this post to all of those who lived (and sometimes died) for that depth of honesty.
They make our world a better place.
Such a great post, Andrea. I agree on the depth of honesty — write from the heart, or what’s the point? And I love R.E.M.
