Music & Words

Indie music blog. Their music, our words, in perfect harmony.

#MusicMonday

Good friends share their secrets with you, but best friends share their music. I first met Jill through twitter, where we hooked up over our love of The Script’s music.  We soon discovered that we had a lot more in common, musically.  She regularly began sharing songs with me on what we affectionately call #Tunesday.

In keeping with our fan-to-fan music sharing ideals, this week’s #MusicMonday is brought to you by my musical soulmate, Jill.

What is the first song you can remember really falling in love with? I first fell in love with music when I was six years old, and my first taste was Madonna.  I was at my then-best-friend Leigh’s house. We put on MTV and I saw the video for “True Blue” for the first time. From then on I was hooked. When one of my aunts found out I loved Madonna, she gave me her Like A Virgin cassette. The rest is history.

We both share a love of vinyl. How many are in your collection? What’s your most prized album? My vinyl collection only consists of about thirty records right now.  There is a tie for most prized album – one is a track made by my dear friend Dan, who is no longer on this plane of existence.  The other is my mislabeled pressing of Deepsky’s “Cosmic Dancer,” which the Jasons from Deepsky took the time to sign when I met them back in 2002.

If you could only choose 5 songs to listen to for the rest of your life, what would they be?  That’s like asking me to pick my favorite grain of sand. It really depends on my mood and the genre of music I’m currently feeling. But if I have to choose, here goes:

  1. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You – Led Zeppelin
  2. Lover You Should Have Come Over – Jeff Buckley
  3. Rebel Rebel – David Bowie
  4. If I Get High – Nothing But Thieves
  5. November Rain – Guns N’ Roses

Now, what are your top 5 picks for #MusicMonday?

#5  Coasts – Wolves

Coasts

The drums in this song are INSANE. They’re big and booming, and the kick drum is just IN YO FACE. They bang so hard.  Not to mention Coasts is a super talented band. They immediately grabbed my ear when I first heard them on Zane Lowe’s show when he was on BBC Radio 1. There is not one song on their album that I don’t like.

#4  The Kills – Doing It To Death

I’m a really big fan of Jack White and The Dead Weather, the band Jack has with Alison Mosshart, who is in The Kills with a Brit, Jamie Hince.  This is the first single off their forthcoming album, Ash & Ice.  The song just has a great melody that you can easily find yourself singing along with.

#3  Ed Sheeran –  Bloodstream

You just can’t go wrong with Ed Sheeran. He is a super talented guy with a knack for writing great songs, and this one definitely delivers. The passion with which he sings the line “All the voices in my mind/calling out across the line” over and over gave me chills.

#2  Muse – Uprising

Muse is another band you just can’t go wrong with. Their music is just amazing and Matt Bellamy is one of the best vocalists and guitar players I have ever seen. I’m also heavily involved in politics, so this song embodies all of that.

#1  Run the Jewels – Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)

I had to throw some hip hop into this. I just looooove Killer Mike and El-P, the duo that make up Run the Jewels. Their lyrics are intelligent, socially and politically relevant, and the beats are sick. This song includes a verse from the MC of one of my favorite bands, Rage Against the Machine – Zach de la Rocha. It’s nice to hear that Zach still has it.
