You don’t get me high any more by Phantogram #music365 #day42

Tell me it’s not a catchy title! I have to say, the song delivers on it.  Phantogram Three music band indie

Who are Phantogram?

Phantogram are Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel, a duo from New York, playing together since 2007. They were friends in high school and one day they’ve decided to record music together. Good decision!

What’s the song about?

On the surface it’s about substance addiction of course but dig a little deeper into the analogy and you’ll discover loss and desperate longing.

“You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” is kind of about this feeling of everything being redundant and nothing being good enough (Josh Carter to pitchfork)

“…wanting to feel something strong and doing whatever it takes to feel it again, because you know it feels good and you miss it” (Sarah Barthel to pitchfork)

Why should you listen to it?

It’s not the first song to compare desperation to substance addiction but I’ve found the combination of almost zen-calm melodies with electronics and heavy beats very powerful.

How to keep in touch with the band?

Their new album, Three, comes out in September and the band is on tour in USA and Canada. Follow Phantogram for updates on twitter and facebook.

Lyrics for ‘You don’t get me high any more’ by Phantogram

I don’t like staying at home
When the moon is bleeding red
Woke up stoned in the backseat
From a dream where my teeth fell out of my head

Cut it up, cut it up, yeah
Everybody’s on something here
My godsend chemical best friend
Skeleton whispering in my ear

Walk with me to the end
Stare with me into the abyss
Do you feel like letting go?
I wonder how far down it is

Nothing is fun
Not like before
You don’t get me high anymore
Used to take one
Now it’s takes four
You don’t get me high anymore

Runnin’ through emergency rooms
Spinning wheels and ceiling fans
My hand shake cellophane landscape
Mannequin (fakin’ it) the best I can.

It’s Cadillac, Cadillac red
No hands on the steering wheel
I’m crashing this save-a-ho
Puppet show
UFO
Obliterate the way I feel

Walk with me to the end
Stare with me into the abyss
Do you feel like letting go?
I wonder how far down it is

Nothing is fun
Not like before
You don’t get me high anymore
Used to take one
Now it’s takes four
You don’t get me high anymore
You don’t get me high anymore
You don’t get me high anymore

Walk with me to the end
Stare with me into the abyss
Do you feel like letting go?
I wonder how far down it is

Nothing is fun
Not like before
You don’t get me high anymore
Used to take one
Now it’s takes four
You don’t get me high anymore

(high anymore)
(you don’t get me, you don’t get me high anymore)
You don’t get me high anymore
(high anymore)
(you don’t get me, you don’t get me high anymore)
You don’t get me high anymore

Good question! #music365 is my year-long challenge to find and share one new song every day. I sometimes skip a day but always catch up! Listen to all the songs on Soundcloud, Spotify or YouTube and tell me your favourite. I don’t think it’s easy to choose one!

About Miss Andi

Learning to be unapologetically me but healthier. Shamelessly personifying my dog, Mia, who is my soulmate, though doesn't let me read as much as I used to. One day I'll finish a novel that will not save the world - but might make it smile.
